Phothula is a retail development in Inland, KZN. We aimed to create a culturally-inclusive, community centric and inviting spaces. Throughout the process - we developed clear drivers from the research to understand the local users needs and create spaces not just for trade, but for social gathering and activities.
The design language is composed of cylindrical planes, drawing from the spatial planning of traditional Zulu huts, where the circular form symbolizes the continuity of life beyond the physical world.
This symbolism plays a vital role in establishing a meaningful connection with the local Zulu community and is informed by a critical regionalism approach to architecture, which seeks to ground contemporary design within local cultural and contextual narratives.

The introduction of the courtyard enables public interaction and social engagement, which are fundamental aspects of Ubuntu. Ubuntu is a life principle upheld by the Zulu people, expressed in the phrase “umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu.” This philosophy emphasizes interdependence, affirming that we exist through our relationships with others and not in isolation.
The layout of the development is positioned to maximize natural lighting by responding to the sun path, while also ensuring maximum visibility of the stores for potential users. Clear and legible movement pathways are incorporated to promote ease of circulation. These elements are critical design principles in retail architecture, contributing to the efficiency and overall success of the retail spaces.
